Trivia: A cross between Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Genet, Fuji was developed at the Tohoku Research Station in Fujisaki, Aomori, Japan in the late 1930s. It took over the Japanese market in 1962 before invading the States in the 1980s, where it has quickly become one of the most popular market varieties. It is the town where the fruit was developed, Fujisaki, which lends Fuji its name, not Mount Fuji, as some have speculated.
Notes: Just 30 years after its U.S. introduction, this Japanese import has become the go-to fruit for many sweet-toothed shoppers. You’ll find Fuji in every corner grocery, so why choose a Rittman Fuji? One reason is freshness: having come just off the tree, Rittman Fuji’s retain more sweetness than shipped market varieties. And since Rittman apples don’t need to travel long distances, they remain free of the waxy substance shippers apply to their apples to keep them from deteriorating. The result is a noticeably superior eating experience. Best of all, at Rittman you can pair your Fuji to other sweet varieties that you’ll never find in the supermarket.
