Grimes Golden

Grimes Golden

Flavor: Bright, spicy sweetness

Approximate Ripening: Late September

Uses: Eating, all-purpose cooking, hard cider

Trivia: Found by Thomas Grimes in 1804 in Brooke County, WV, near the town of Wellsburg, where Johnny Appleseed and his brother founded a nursery

Notes: Grimes Golden looks a lot like Golden Delicious, which makes sense because it is widely believed to be the father of Golden Delicious.  Yet Grimes Golden didn’t pass along its spicier notes; those, it kept for itself, and they combine with the apple’s natural sweetness to produce a robust, complex flavor.
