Flavor: Mild tartness
Approximate Ripening: Mid-late August
Uses: Eating, saucing
Trivia: Thought to have come from Rambure, France, where it was first recorded way back in 1535. Came to America as early as 1767. Summer Rambo is a greenish-yellow apple, but it has a red-shaded sister called Red Sumbo. As to whether the Rambo apple served as the inspiration for one of American’s most popular action heroes … well, they’re both big.
Notes: There is beauty in asymmetry, a truth perfectly encapsulated in Summer Rambo’s squat, leaning form. The kiss of red on the delicate green skin makes this misshapen but delicious apple an eye-catcher.
